MacroMile Privacy Policy

Effective date:

MacroMile is a calorie and macro tracking app for iPhone, published by AISS LLC ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information the app uses, where it goes, how long it's kept, and the choices you have.

The short version: MacroMile has no accounts. Your food log, profile and history are stored on your phone. Some optional AI features send information to our server and to OpenAI to generate a response, and they only do so after you allow it. We don't sell your data, show ads or track you across other apps and websites.

1. Information stored only on your phone

MacroMile stores the following on your device. We don't receive a copy of it:

  • Your profile: name (if you enter one), age, sex, height, weight, goal weight, activity level, dietary restrictions and foods you dislike.
  • Your plan and history: calorie and macro targets, food log entries, meals you save or create, favorites, meal plans, weekly corrections, weight entries, body measurements, and supplements you add or log.
  • App settings: appearance, your AI features choice, recently suggested meals, and a random install identifier (described in section 3).

There is no MacroMile account and no server copy of this information. If you delete the app, this information is deleted from your phone. If your iPhone is backed up to iCloud or a computer, your backup may include app data, according to your own Apple settings.

The Nutrition scanner, which reads a Nutrition Facts label with the camera, works entirely on your phone. The label image is not uploaded.

2. Information sent when you use AI features

MacroMile offers optional features that use artificial intelligence. They only run after you tap Allow AI features on the in-app permission screen. You can turn them off at any time in Profile → AI features. Tracking and logging work without them.

When you use an AI feature, the app sends a request to our server, hosted with Supabase. Our server forwards it to OpenAI, which generates the response. Only the feature you are using sends information, and only at the moment you use it:

  • Photo Snap (log a meal from a photo): the meal photo you take or choose. Before upload, the app shrinks the photo and re-creates the image, which removes location and other embedded photo metadata.
  • Ask about your diet (diet chat): your questions and the conversation so far, plus a summary of the last 30 days of your food log. The summary includes food names, calories, meals and dates; nutrient totals and the foods that contribute to them; your calorie targets; and your weight trend.
  • Ask for a change (plan chat): your requests and the conversation so far, this week's meal plan (meal slots, calorie budgets and meal names), and your go-to meals and saved restaurant orders.
  • Meal ideas (compose a meal): the meal type and calorie target, your dietary restrictions and disliked foods, ingredient preferences you pick, words from foods you often log, and recently suggested meals.
  • Supplement brand suggestions: the supplement type you are viewing (for example, "iron") and its form (for example, capsule).

AI features never send your name, age, sex, email or contact details. Each request includes the random install identifier described in section 3.

How OpenAI handles it. OpenAI processes this information to generate the response, under its API terms. By default, standard API platform calls (like /v1/chat/completions) are retained for abuse monitoring for up to 30 days.

What our server keeps. Our server does not store your photos, messages, food log or meal plans; they pass through to OpenAI and back. Our server logs record only counts, such as how many items were identified, never the content itself. Supplement brand suggestions are cached by supplement type and form, which contains nothing about you.

AI responses are estimates. They are not medical advice.

3. Install identifier and usage limits

When the app is installed, it creates a random identifier that is stored on your phone. It's not linked to your name, Apple Account, email, or device hardware, and it changes if you delete and reinstall the app.

Each AI request includes this identifier so our server can enforce a daily limit on AI requests. Our server stores a usage record with the identifier, the feature used, the date and the number of requests. We use these records to enforce daily limits and to understand how features are used, so we can operate and improve the app. We keep them for as long as we operate MacroMile. They contain no photos, messages, food logs or other content, and they aren't linked to your name or contact details.

4. Food search and barcode lookups

MacroMile's food database is hosted with Supabase. When you search for a food, restaurant or supplement, look up a barcode, or open a restaurant menu, the app sends your search text or barcode to that database to get results.

These lookups aren't AI features and don't require the AI permission. We don't store your searches, but our hosting provider keeps standard technical request logs (which can include IP address and request details) for 7 days for security and operations.

5. Purchases

Subscriptions are purchased and managed through Apple's App Store. Apple processes your payment; we never receive your payment details. The app receives only whether your subscription is active. Apple's handling of purchase information is covered by Apple's privacy policy.

6. Camera and photo access

MacroMile asks for camera access so you can photograph a meal or scan a barcode or Nutrition Facts label. You can also choose a photo from your library through the system photo picker, which gives the app only the photo you select. Barcode and label scans are read on your phone. Only Photo Snap uploads a photo, as described in section 2. You can change camera access at any time in iPhone Settings.

MacroMile does not access your location, contacts, microphone or Apple Health data.

7. What we don't do

  • We don't sell or rent your personal information.
  • We don't share your information for advertising, and the app contains no ads.
  • We don't use third-party analytics or tracking software, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
  • We don't use your information to build a profile of you for advertising or any purpose unrelated to the app.

8. Service providers

We use the following providers only to operate the features described above:

  • Supabase: hosts our food database and the server that relays AI requests.
  • OpenAI: generates AI responses for the features in section 2.
  • Apple: App Store purchases and subscriptions.

We require these providers to protect the information they process for us with safeguards at least as strong as those described in this policy, and to use it only to provide their services to us.

9. Your choices and rights

  • Turn off AI features: go to Profile → AI features → Turn off AI features. The app stops sending AI requests immediately. Information already sent cannot be recalled from the response that was generated.
  • Delete information on your phone: delete individual entries in the app, or delete the app to remove all of it.
  • Delete server records: usage records are tied to a random identifier rather than to you. To ask us to delete them, contact us at support@aisslabs.com.
  • Access and other requests: depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, or to opt out of certain processing. Because we have no accounts and keep almost nothing on our servers, most of your information is already under your control on your phone. To make a request, email support@aisslabs.com. We will respond within the time required by applicable law, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

10. Health information

Food logs, nutrient intake, weight and body measurements can be considered health information under some laws, including Washington's My Health My Data Act. We use this information only to provide the app's features to you. We share it with a service provider (OpenAI, through our server) only when you use an AI feature after giving permission, and we never sell it. You can withdraw permission at any time as described in section 9.

11. Children

MacroMile is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided information through the app, contact us at support@aisslabs.com.

12. Security

Information sent from the app to our server and on to OpenAI is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Information stored on your phone is protected by iOS security, including your device passcode. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we limit what leaves your phone to what each feature needs.

13. International users

Our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries. By using AI features or food search, you understand your request will be processed in those countries.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. We will change the effective date above, and if a change affects what information AI features send or who receives it, the app will ask for your permission again before sending anything.
